Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

Meet Melanie.

Melanie Garrison, COTA/L, is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant with the McKibben & Monte team in Tampa. She earned her Associate Degree from South University in Tampa and brings a compassionate, relationship-focused approach to helping children build the skills they need to succeed in everyday life. Her areas of interest include emotional regulation, handwriting development, and supporting children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Melanie’s favorite part of being a therapist is witnessing growth and knowing she has played a role in creating meaningful change in a child’s life. Whether it’s helping a child develop new coping strategies, improve their independence, or gain confidence in their abilities, she finds tremendous fulfillment in seeing progress unfold over time.

Her journey into occupational therapy was inspired by her younger brother, who has autism. Throughout his childhood, Melanie watched the positive impact therapists had on his development and well-being. Seeing the difference those relationships made in his life sparked a desire to pursue a career where she could help other children and families experience similar growth and success.

When working with a new child, Melanie prioritizes building rapport and establishing trust through play. She believes meaningful therapy begins with strong relationships and works hard to create a fun, engaging environment where children feel safe, supported, and motivated to participate. Her child-centered approach allows her to connect with each child’s unique personality while developing the skills necessary for long-term success.

One of Melanie’s greatest professional rewards is being part of a child’s journey as they learn new ways to navigate challenges and make positive changes. She is especially passionate about helping children develop emotional regulation skills, strengthen functional abilities, and gain confidence in their everyday routines.

Outside of work, Melanie enjoys staying active by going to the gym, exercising, and taking walks. She also loves spending time with family and friends, playing board games, and creating lasting memories. Above all, she considers being a mom her greatest accomplishment and greatest source of joy.

Melanie’s favorite inspirational quote is: “It is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring about the most lasting change.” This philosophy guides both her personal life and her work with children, where she celebrates every milestone, big or small, as part of the journey toward growth and independence.
